We're Moving This Blog

We're moving this blog
to a url that will match it's Hunger Travels title making it easier to find in searches and online. It seems to make more sense, so we encourage you to become a member on the new site.

The Hunger Travels will have a website that you can find at:

We have merged all of our "blogs" into one at:

I felt it would be too much work to keep writing three separate ones and decided to merge all of our troop and homeless efforts with our family's travels. It will be new and exciting, so we hope you'll enjoy it!

Thanks so much for your interest in this project.
We love supporters, it feels good to have others rooting for us!!
We find it motivational and it encourages us to keep on going to help more and more!!

 THE STORY BEGINS....
The trip was scheduled to begin at the end of June 2012 and continue until the beginning of September 2012. Starting from New Jersey and going as far as California and covering everywhere in between. BUT... it has started early. On a recent trip to California a decision was made to spend some time hitting the streets and learning stories. Like they say- no better time than the present to accomplish something. So I did just that, after spending about $40 on water, packaged snacks, and hand wipes, I bagged them up, and went in search of people to help. Feeling motivated, I buckled up, pulled the car out of the spot, and didn't even make it out of the parking lot. I have found my first story.......

This efforts original goal is to create and distribute 1000 homeless care bags. Last year we did only about 100 and feel strongly that we can meet this year's goal! In just two days, on my recent trip, I had the opportunity to meet 14 individuals and was privileged to record some of their stories. The goal has been slightly changed after an awakening question.

My plan was to create a photographic journal of all the people we met. Including the stories of how they got to be where they are today. Then turn it into a book for everyone to read, including facts and statistics on homelessness, with the hopes of raising awareness and erasing attached prejudices.

Then I was asked "so what are you doing to help them?". My response "I am creating care packages to give to help with their hunger". Then I was asked THE question " Awe, that's nice. It's providing their stomach with immediate relief, but what are your plans for the long term effect?". My response to that awakening question" Well holy toledo, that's a good question. I haven't thought that far in advance".

So after leaving that conversation, I thought, and thought, and thought.....how can I help them more? I really want to shrink them all and put them in my purse and take them home with me. They could feel safe, shower, be fed, and live comfortably, but since in reality that is not really an option.....keep thinking. Then it hit me!! What seemed to be such a good idea- possibly could it be the idea to follow through??

If  I was able to provide shelter, food, counseling if needed, and education- would that help them long term? I have no doubt in my mind it would. So now I'm faced with the obstacle of how to make it happen. How can I have efficiency studio apartments built, with an education wing to offer vocational skills, therapy sessions, and make sure they are fed?

I have no clue yet!! But I will continue to do what I do and provide immediate relief while working on my book, and see how things start to fall in place. If I just keep trying to work toward the goal, it will be hard not to meet it.
